Me? Do a strip routine? Like hell.

I’d said I’d give her a performance and Blaire had let her mind go crazy. It was fun though, watching the play of emotions on her face. Disbelief, interest, and then anger. She was almost predictable, that feisty female. She could think what she wanted; I was taking the work out of her hands. She worried too much. I was here, and Kristofer was here, and we’d pulled together more in less time for sure.

If we could calm down a group of rowdy warriors in a pinch, we could entertain a crowd of females. It wouldn’t be too difficult. I had a pretty solid idea of what I wanted to do, but I still wasn’t prepared for the overwhelming enthusiasm from my brother when I told him I’d accosted his employee.

“Good. I can’t stand that guy. Shut the door.”

I shut the door as he asked and sat down in one of the chairs facing his desk, confused. The chair itself wasn’t confusing, it was wide and soft and had ornate wooden arms. It looked expensive, but comfortable. No, it was my brother that was confusing, considering the last time we’d seen each other was right after I told him I wouldn’t be coming out of the water again. Between Kris and Charli I didn’t know who’d been angrier.

Now he just looked…busy.

“You want to tell me why you don’t look surprised to see me here, Kristofer?” The chair was softer than it looked even, and the cushion cradled my butt like it was made for me to sit in, so I stretched my legs out in front of me and let my head lean against the back of the seat. I didn’t get to do things like sit comfortably in the lake. Your options were limited; either swim, or sleep. We didn’t have things like chairs underwater. I guessed Kris thought the same way, and that’s why everything, even down to the guest chairs in his office, was designed for comfort.

He finally looked up at me, acknowledging my presence with his attention and not just his words. “I don’t look surprised because I’m not. You’re my brother, and while I still think you’re a colossal dick, I know you won’t leave your mate hanging like this. Not when you know who she is, and that she needs you.”

“We aren’t mated,” I corrected him immediately. I hadn’t taken her. I hadn’t made that choice. I’d kissed her, sure, but that was as much her fault as mine. Sitting all curled up and vulnerable in my lap. It didn’t matter that I put her there. How was I supposed to resist her when she was right there in front of my face? All prickly and angry but soft and needy at the same time?

“Doesn’t change the fact that she’s your mate.” He looked at me without saying anything else, daring me to contradict him. Like he could see the thoughts inside my head. I couldn’t tell Kris he was wrong.
